From Hackney, With Love: An Intimate History of Gentrification, an insider exploration of the dramatic metamorphosis of my area over the last few decades. This book is about my life and the lives of Hackney’s diverse, working class communities, documenting and examining how our communities have survived, contested, and persevered through the relentless gentrification of the borough. By exploring the impact of government policy since the 1980s and the different views of residents across Hackney’s most contested neighbourhoods and cultural landmarks, this book will allow me to amplify the complex realities of our communities living within Hackney at the height of the popular debate on gentrification, housing, and social decline within Britain today.
From Hackney, With Love is a memoir of the Hackney of ‘old’ and ‘new’, and explores my sense of loss as a result of the impact of gentrification within borough, examined through some of the most contested issues facing Hackney today, including housing and regeneration, politics, class, race, education, youth violence and culture. But it also gives an in-depth analysis of the processes of gentrification, both within Hackney and how it has influenced other inner-city areas, describing how multicultural, working-class communities have often been displaced in favour of wealthier, often white gentrifier communities.
From Hackney, With Love is a reflection of my own, personal attachment to the area, and my own apprehensions towards the changes in the borough, but I also use Hackney as a focal point for the wider debate on gentrification that has become so controversial today. This book is a love letter to Hackney, one of the most vibrant parts of London and a warning that its existence as a politically and socially energetic, diverse and multicultural area is in jeopardy.
